Miami Beach Time Capsule

For all those Historic Home lovers, I’m sure you would fall within those who could appreciate a time capsule.  Miami Beach held one on December of 2009 that isn’t set to open up until 2029.  People brought in pictures and other artifacts to place in the time capsule.  This was held in front of the Art Deco Welcome Center during Art Basel week and I’m sure that will be the same time frame for when they open the time capsule.

How cool will it be to see the pictures and items from 10 years back?  You might not realize it but a lot can change in 10 years.  Imagine the amount of change the Art Deco Welcome Center has gone through the years since 1923 when the buildings started to pop up.  Not to mention, the amount of changes that the Art Basel week has gone through as well.

If you have no idea what the Art Deco Welcome Center is all about, here is a quick recap.  This was the first 20th-century neighborhood to be recognized by the National Register of Historic Places, Miami Beach's Art Deco Historic District is made up of 800+ buildings and structures built between 1923 and 1943.  When decades of neglect nearly caused Miami’s Art Deco scene to be demolished, an historic preservationist named Barbara Baer Capitman founded the Miami Design Preservation League, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting and promoting the appearance and integrity of the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District.  It was through her hard work and perseverance that Art Deco in Miami gained national protection, motivating designers and developers to bring out the area’s Art Deco elements and restore its pastel-hued boutique hotels to their original style.

Also, for those who have never been to an Art Basel week, the first Art Basel was held in June of 1970. It was founded by a trio of Swiss art professionals: Ernst Beyeler, a dealer and collector, and gallerists Trudl Bruckner and Balz Hilt. It was established to rival Art Cologne, a contemporary art fair that emerged in neighboring Germany just three years prior.  Located in Basel, a cultural hub in idyllic northwestern Switzerland, Art Basel saw immediate success. In its inaugural year, it hosted 90 galleries from 10 different countries and attracted over 16,000 visitors. In 2002, Art Basel debuted its first outpost: Art Basel in America at Miami Beach. Like its parent, this new addition was a hit, with 180 exhibitors sharing their art. It launched a second offshoot, Art Basel in Hong Kong in 2013, which has since become Asia's premiere art fair.

Now, back to the time capsule, make sure you mark your calendar, the Miami Beach time Capsule opens in 2029, that’s only nine years away…  This could be a good idea for you to do at home with your kids.  Grab a mason jar, have each family member place an item of their choice in it and bury it in the back yard to re-open in ten years.  Imagine how different they will be when you open it up as a family.  Of course, you have to own your home to be able to do this so if you don’t own one yet, reach out to us.
